hi this is an amazingly early pre victorian pewter tankard 1800s, it is hallmarked J McGlashen and co Glasgow.
in those days people took their own tankards with them to different inns and they would have to be checked to see that they did indeed hold 1 quart after checking the tankard would then be marked to ve it held the correct amount similar to duty and excise ,there are six marks on this tankard all hailing from the fife area of scotland so this tankard has done its rounds, . a remarkable survivor.
